Agriculture

a basket of fruitsAgriculture is the backbone of our rural economy in Karagwe district as well as the whole of Kagera region. Almost all people in the Kagera region are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood (food and income). However, for the past years, the agriculture sector is facing a lot of set backs which have hindered any further developments rendering it near to a nuisance. This has had several repercussions and for any future development, a strict investment in agriculture is an imperative and to be put on top of priority list.

Since 1993, FADECO has concentrated her efforts to promote sustainable agriculture as a way towards sustainable development. Several projects have been started in this endeavour and include the following:

· Organic Farming including Integrated Plant Nutrition (IPN) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
· Agricultural extension (farmers' training and technical support)
· Agro-forestry and tree planting
· Soil feeding and conservation practices
· Post harvest management
· Marketing.

What are some of the problems to be addressed ?

Unemployment:

  • youths who have dropped out of school without formal employment training are now at large
  • Privatisation and restructuring has left many people retrenched without jobs.
  • existing small scale entrepreneurs lack basic business skills

Food insecurity and Malnutrition:

Food shortage is widespread in the region due to limited post harvest storage mechanism of agricultural products. Food is from garden to pot to mouth. Crops with a short shelf life including Bananas, tomatoes, fruits : mangoes, jack fruits, pineapples and vegetables cannot be effectively preserved. As a result, these rot and what a wastage and loss.

Poverty and Low income levels:

Farmers usualy have nothing or very little to sell, or have limited access to any other form of income generation. The vulnerable groups lack the means for a constant source of income. Those that are able to produce a surplus, are unable to process nor sell because the markets are simply not readily available.

Poor markets

Limited access to ready market coupled with limited ability to preserve, process or store their produce means that their crops get spoilt with no return to labour and any form of investment put therein. The result is that, these vulnerable groups remain in a viscous circle of poverty.
