Micro, Small and medium Enterprise development

FADECO has tried to encourage and entice young people to get involved in market gardening since 1993. It has assisted (technically and logistically) several youth groups to set up tomatoes, onion, cabbage, pineapple and passion fruits gardens so that they can get an income from sale of their products on the local market. Once in a while, FADECO has conducted business skills development workshops to youths and women groups with one message: to assist them create own jobs and be self- employed.

Environmental protection and sustainable organic agriculture.

FADECO has been at the forefront promoting agro-forestry and sustainable organic farming and in environmental awareness campaigns through seminars and workshops, tree planting activities, audio-visual shows, etc.

FADECO is known for promoting organic farming and post harvest technologies. It has trained farmers in low external input sustainable agriculture (LEISA) in collaboration with Kenya Institute of Organic farming (KIOF). It has been involved in training farmers different ways of composting, double dug beds, raised beds, companion planting, integrated pest management, micro animal husbandry, etc.

Post harvest crop processing, storage and marketing.

This is the main involvement of FADECO to date. It has introduced successfully the technology of fruit drying using solar dryers. This has been done through technology transfer: training and demonstration. FADECO now assist with the marketing of solar dried fruits and vegetables through a local company called RIFT VALLEY FOODS LTD.

Renewable energy technologies

FADECO has also tried to introduce several IT technologies and renewable energy systems. Some of these are: Improved cooking stoves to mitigate fuel wood consumption in homes, solar fruit drying for food preservation and storage; construction of traditional food stores/barns, hay box cookers, wind energy, micro-hydro power systems and Solar water heating.

Health Education Campaign against HIV/AIDS

FADECO has tried since 1993, to integrate sensitization against HIV/AIDS pandemic alongside all its development undertakings. The main concentration on this line has been sensitization campaigns, audio-visual shows and distribution of leaflets/booklets on HIV/AIDS. This pandemic has penetrated into our community yet little efforts have been made to address it.

Resource/ Information Centre

FADECO has set up a Resource/ Information center with reference materials (books, newsletters, periodicals, reports, Video tapes and CDROMS) on development aspects. All stakeholders in development especially NGOs are free to use this resource center. There are plans to develop this into a fully fledged resource centre with unlimited access to the internet.

Low cost housing

FADECO has plans to disseminate low cost housing technology using soil stabilized blocks. These would be used to build cheap but durable houses and rain water harvesting tanks.

FADECO is managed by an Executive Board which is composed of Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, and two committee members. The different projects are managed by a project Manager employed by FADECO. The chairman is the overall head of the organization.
