Profile:
FADECO Trading Co. Ltd. is a limited liability company which deals in
the promotion and marketing of non traditional export crops : solar dried
fruits & vegetables, honey, mushrooms, vanilla, etc. on a fair trade
basis. Rift Valley Foods is the brand name for its products.
It is the trading arm of FADECO , a local registered NGO that promotes
sustainable development of the grassroots communities. The Company is
also involved in technology transfer and publication of relevant literature
to promote agricultural production.
Legal Status
FADECO Trading Co. Ltd was registered on the 5th January 1999 with Reg.
No. 35530 under the Registrar of Companies Act.
Place of business:
FADECO TRADING Co. Ltd has established its central office at Kayanga
town, Karagwe District, Kagera Region. It has connection to both electricity
and communication facilities. The office/central collection station is
easily accessible from Kayanga.
Background information:
From 1995, FADECO, as a local NGO started working at agricultural improvement
by introducing low cost and appropriate post harvest technologies for
cereals, legumes, tubers fruits and vegetables. With time, main concentration
focussed on solar fruit / vegetable drying because apparently, these crops
seem to have no easy way of preserving them.
Unfortunately solar dried products posed as new products for the market
and no existing company was interested to trade in these at the time.
This lead therefore to the formation of a trading company to handle any
surplus product, identify outlets and assist producer groups access to
this market.
The main objectives of the company now include the following:-
1. to promote solar drying ( improved sun drying) of fruits and vegetables
an appropriate, low cost and cost effective technology for food preservation
and storage. This technology entirely relies on renewable energy ( the
sun) and is environmentally friendly.
2. to improve nutritional standards in family diets and also enhance household
food security by ensuring that food is properly preserved, stored, and
used at later times when there is need; also by ensuring constant availability
of needed foods throughout the year especially for fruits and vegetables;
3. to enhance household / individual revenue through sale and marketing
of quality solar dried fruits / vegetables. There are several outlets
of solar dried products both on the local and export market. Through solar
drying, there is value added to such crops.
