Introduction:FADECO puts environmental conservation on top of its priority areas that need urgent attention. The present environment trends pose a lot of contrasts leading any new comer or visitor(s) to query: why are there no forests in Karagwe ? Why is firewood a problem ? Why do people burn the bushes every year? There are several answers that one would get to the above questions. Most likely and almost unconsciously, one would retort, it is the refugees!? .. another might respond: I do not know. And the story end there. Still one would query: what has so far been the impact of the many efforts of International and Local NGOs, CBOs and individuals to conserve the environment ? What are the existing policies pertaining to he environment ? What about the capacity of the local government in this regards ? Several attempts are being made by NGOs, CBOs, CBIs and individuals to conserve the environment in Kagera Region. Concentration has been put at tree planting. A few organization have considered improved Fuelwood cooking stoves and peat harvesting. Some few other have gone beyond to look into land use planning, conservation of water sources &catchment areas and bee keeping. All these are very good efforts. FADECO feels that, for a sustainable environment conservation programme or project, all the above aspects plus ENVIRONMENT EDUCATION should go hand in hand. Without building the capacities of the land users to know how to care for their land and environment, all these efforts will end up as we witness the bush fires every year. The role of FADECO in environment conservation:FADECO thinks that a holistic approach towards environmental conservation is he sustainable way. The primary intervention is capacity building i.e. environmental awareness. To sensitize the communities about the effective utilization of the natural resources in a sustainable manner. FADECO has tried to do this through mirror extension using popular drama in schools especially in 6 primary schools in Kimuli ward. FADECO has also participated in making environmental video documentaries, audiovisual shows featuring environment, seminars/workshops and publication of WAZA, the only development quarterly magazine in the region.The following are the main environmental aspects that FADECO needs to be addressed to effectively and sustainably conserve our environment:
