Africa's Digital Divide
- Africa is e-absent - 1% have internet access and 2% of tele-density
- But only 12% of global population
- Africa is marginalized with 2% share of global trade
- Africa is voiceless
- Africa is wealthy but poor (poverty amidst plenty)
- Africa's regional institutions for cooperation and development are
orphans
- Africa has the biggest potential to benefit from applications of
ICTs for development
- 3 telephones per 1000 inhabitants
- 4 daily news papers per 1000 people
- 279 radios per 1000 people
- 21 TV sets per 1000 people
- 2.4 personal computers per 1000 people
- 0.16 internet hosts per 10,000 people
- 25,000 internet users out of 35.0 mln
ICT situation in Karagwe
- 1.5 in 1000 people has access to telephone
- 150 TV sets for 450,000 people
- 1 news paper per 50,000 people
- 100 out of 450,000 people with access to cable TV
- 16 institutions with access to email
- 4-5 institutions/ individuals with access to internet (limited usage
I.e. 6.00 a.m to 6.00 p.m)
- 0-1 with unlimited access to internet
- 1 Internet Cafe at Kayanga
- 2 Mobile phone companies (Vodacom and Celtel) but coverage still small.
ICT progress in Tanzania
- Tax on importation of computers waived
- Many second hand (refurbished) computers now available on market
(TShs 150,000 - 300,000/-)
- Government policy on ICT development in the country in process
- ICTs concentrated more in urban areas
